LocalSEO Guide has finally revealed its study results for the Local ranking factors for 2017. The methodology use here is a bit different to the Local ranking factors Survey that Moz conducted. Both of these surveys though, merit a detailed and closer look.

Along with PlacesScout and university of California, Irvine, LocalSEO Guide looked into more than 100,000 local businesses hailing from 150 different cities and at more than 200 factors to find out what are the variables that are correlated with the local results ranking in Google.

The study has revealed the basic conclusions that organic raking factors in the form of anchor texts, keywords, and links matter in boosting visibility in the local scene. It also shows that reviews are critical for a business’ visibility. The study argues that organic and local search algorithms are very much interconnected. While it is true that Google is trying to include some unique variables in its local algorithm it is also a fact that tactics for traditional organic SEO are very much effective when it comes to local ranking.

Google has always stated about how reviews are crucial as factor for ranking. However, having a mention on the review of the city where you are trying to get ranked for, along with a keyword that you are trying to get ranked will have a much higher chances of a higher ranking at the results for Google My Business.

Another positive factor is engagement. The addition of photos along with hours of operations can help add more value to the business. Responding to customer reviews, along with claiming a business profile are necessary when it comes to engaging potential customers. It is a good way to engage the Google platform too so you can show that indeed you have invested.

Those that have been religiously implementing their SEO strategies are certainly going to reap the rewards as well. Google is still rewarding those sites with pages that have anchor texts that are optimized around the city and the keyword.

Off-page signals

The study reveals that off page signals seem to be diminishing in terms of importance. It is revealed that they now have even less correlation compared to what they used to the previous year. Reviews on third party sites as well as citations still do hold value.

Website factors

The same principles apply in this aspect. This means that if you want to be among the top ranked businesses in the local area, make sure that you are exerting as much effort as you can to top the organic searches. If you are aiming to get a term ranked, then making sure that it is present on the specific page that you are aiming at ranking is crucial for achieving that goal.

Categorical ranking factors are also still pretty much working such optimizing the meta tags and ensuring that the site is optimised for the mobile platform.
